Bonavita BV1900TS 8-Cup Coffee Maker Review in Detail.
The price of BV1900TS is $134.48 at the time of writing. It is one of the SCAA certified coffee makers. It gives consistently great tasting coffee without any hassle. However, there are no much advanced features. With the push of a single button, you get your coffee ready. The machine is not programmable, no brew-pause option, no timer. In that angle, the machine is bit overpriced.
The Coffee taste
The term ‘smoothness’ is what I can use to describe the taste of coffee from Bonavita because it is less bitter. The credit goes to the flat-bottomed filter basket and the large shower head. Bonavita’s wide shower head evenly distributes water over the coffee grounds to ensure uniform extraction. I could never see unused coffee grounds in the basket.
The earlier model of Bonavita i.e., Bonavita BV 1800SS had conical filter basket. The filter basket in 1900TS model is flat bottomed that ensures better extraction of flavors from the grounds. If you wonder how flat or cone shaped filter makes any difference, the answer is simple – The coffee in the flat filter basket receive a more even share of the water during brewing. Whereas in the case of the conical filter, there will be significant channeling, resulting in a poor extraction. The coffee at the outer edge may not be fully saturated by the end of the brew cycle.
A critical step in brewing a great cup of coffee is reaching as well as maintaining the optimal water temperature. Water which is either too hot or too cold produces an imbalanced flavor. Most of the single cup coffee maker suffer from the same drawback. They often fall below 190 F. Bonavita brewers are fitted with a powerful and precise 1500-watt heater that reaches the optimal temperature quickly and maintains that temperature throughout the brew. This results in faster brewing and, of course, delicious coffee.
Coffee maker design
Bonavita is just one simple best drip coffee maker with a simple design. The 1900TS model is well designed with the practical addition of auto power off button.
Unit comes with stainless steel lined thermal carafe. I always prefer thermal carafes over glass ones. However, pouring out coffee from the carafe without spilling needs some extra skills. Without the carafe lid coffee pours all over the place; with the lid, you can get those last few ounces of coffee. You need to literally make the carafe upside down to pour out those last few ounces of coffee. In both the ways, the carafe is little annoying.
In the Bonavita coffee maker, filter sits directly on the carafe. Now, this is something interesting. Some give thumbs up to this feature, saying it keeps grounds out of the coffee better than other design.
But my concern is that where to keep the carafe lid while coffee is brewing and once the brewing is done where to keep the filter basket?
While the coffee is brewing, you need to keep the carafe lid aside. Once the brewing is done, you need to remove the filter basket, dump the grounds and rinse the basket and set it aside for drying. Filter basket does not connect back to the machine until you are done with the coffee maker. Once you are done, then you can store the basket back on top of the carafe. If you do that, then you still have to store the lid somewhere. The lid takes up less space than the basket anyhow.
Ease of use
Bonavita 19000TS is both easy to use and fine-tuned for exceptional coffee brewing. It is a simple machine with one button and two options.
The single button is to turn on/off the machine. By holding the same button for few seconds, you can activate the pre- infusion option. You need to press the button until the light blinks. This may be little confusing since you have a single button to turn on the machine as well as to set the pre-infusion option.
Let me make it clear – press the button until the light blinks. Now the pre-infusion option is activated. Then push the button to start the brew cycle. A solid light while brewing means the pre-infusion button is not activated and if the light blinks during brewing, then you have set the option right.
Now, you may think what this pre-infusion option is all about?
Freshly roasted coffee gives off carbon dioxide and is called degassing. If the pre-infusion option is set, coffee grounds get soaked before the brewing starts, to allow degassing and this will enhance flavor. I typically use ground coffee, so for me, it tastes best with the solid ‘normal’ option. Occasionally when I grind the whole beans, I like the blinking pre-soak option. It definitely lowers the bitterness considerably and affects the flavor noticeably.
Even, cleaning Bonavita 1900TS is much easy. Most of the parts are made up of stainless steel. You don’t have to worry about any shattered glasses like in the case of BV1800. It never happened to me, though! I handle things carefully, especially when they are made up of glass. Descaling is recommended after every 100 uses.
The plastic parts like – the carafe lid, filter basket, and shower head are all BPA free.
To brew 8 cups of coffee, it took 5 minutes and 30 seconds. When the pre-infusion button is activated, it took additional about 45 seconds to the overall brew time.
So, you can make the oatmeal, pour the coffee, enjoy and rush to office.
I feel the machine will last for a long time since most of the parts are made up of stainless steel. This Bonavita 8 cup coffee maker is backed by two years warranty and they have good customer service. The heating element is made up of copper encased in aluminum.
The sleeker, curvier and compact design of 1900TS Coffee Maker will look great on any kitchen countertop. Unlike, Moccamaster which is one tall machine with an industrial look, the small size of BV1900TS makes it even more countertop-friendly. This is ideal for situations where counter space is at a premium, or in kitchens with low-hanging cabinets.
The ingredients for great coffee are simple: fresh coffee, pure filtered water, and you. Along with them, if you have Bonavita BV1900TS then you are sure to get delicious coffee every day.
If you are a person who does not like too many options and buttons, but just a simple machine that does its job right then go for Bonavita coffee maker. No brew pause, no timer, no programmability but consistently great coffee
Both the models – Bonavita BV 1800SS and Bonavita BV1900TS Coffee Maker are SCAA certified and brew a consistently great cup of coffee that is rich in flavor. BV1900TS Coffee Maker is redesigned on the success of its earlier version 1800SS.
BV1900TS Coffee Maker has auto shut off feature, flat bottomed filter basket and 1500 watt heater that reaches and maintains the optimal water temperature of 200 to 203 F. So, you know that why you are spending that extra $12 to buy the new Bonavita model BV1900TS Coffee Maker.
