Today I am reviewing one of the seven SCAA certified coffee makers. It is a tall machine with a tough aluminum body. Price

The KBGT 741 cost is $319 (at the time of writing) I know $319 is a bit too much for most of you. Hey, wait! Don’t consider the machine is out of your budget so easily. This brewer comes with 5 years manufacturer warranty and repair service center in the USA.

If coffee maker is the one thing that you look forward to every morning then why not buy a good one. The machine is so durable that I bet this will be the last coffee maker you are going to buy. One unit will last a lifetime. Here, I am assuming that you have the good habit of cleaning and descaling the machine regularly!

Are you still thinking it is too much money to spend on a single coffee brewer? Ok, let us assume, now you will go for some other coffee makers, say those under $100, I am sure they are not going to last too long. You need to buy another coffee machine again. Down the line, how much you are going to spend on coffee makers? Are you not going to spend more than $300 overall?!

Instead, invest once on KBGT-741 and I am sure you don’t have to think of purchasing another coffee maker in your lifetime!

The Coffee Taste

With this brewer at home, the taste of the coffee is one less thing to worry about. It is a well-known fact that drip coffee tastes better when brewed at optimal temperature. This coffee maker brew coffee at an optimal temperature of 200 degrees F.

The nine-hole spray head wets the grounds of the filter basket evenly during the brew cycle. So, better extraction and the coffee is flavor rich.

The retention temperature in the thermal carafe is between 176-185°F. So, you get to enjoy hot coffee hours after brewing.

With correct brewing temperature, good extraction and temperature retention this SCAA certified coffee maker give great tasting coffee consistently.

Design

The design is quite satisfying. There are no gimmicks. KBGT-741   is one of the best drip coffee makers with simple and necessary features. Simple machine built right. No too many buttons to confuse you.

Remember, it is a machine that is well designed by Technivorm who are famous for their premium quality products. If you are a true coffee geek, with the KBGT-741 open design, you can even see and stir the grounds while brewing.

The power button, located down near the base looks similar to those of my grandma’s days…But this little electro-mechanical safety switch is very clever. It will stop brewing if the carafe is not in the right place.

The unit comes with a thermal carafe that keeps the brewed coffee fresh and hot for a long time without any burning taste which is most common in the case of glass carafe with warming plate design. It is good that the thermal carafe comes with both brew-thru lid and travel lid. The long tube of the brew-thru lid extends down the carafe well below the coffee level even when the carafe is half full. This is pretty effective in maintaining the coffee temperature. The travel lid is quite solid. It does not allow the coffee to leak through. Try turning the carafe upside down, if you wish!

I am quite happy with the filter options in KBGT-741. You can use a reusable gold cone filter.

Ease of use

KBGT-741 is refreshingly simple and yet built right. A child with an average intelligence can use this brewer. Since it is easy to set up, easy to use, you get a P-E-R-F-E-C-T coffee every time!!

Unlike the KBT-741 which has a manual drip stop option, KBGT  model has the automatic drip stop option. So, you don’t have to wait till it brews the whole pot. Enjoy your cup of black drink even before the machine has completely finished brewing. It is a must option for those who find their patience at the bottom of the coffee mug!!.

However, make sure that the filter basket is not filled with too much of water while using this option. Filter basket may overflow and create a mess. Though I have never faced this issue and the auto drip stop feature worked absolutely fine for me each time, some users seem to have faced the issue. The situation is rare to happen but not excused after paying that huge money.

Cleaning the unit is also made easy with most of the detachable parts. You may not able to reach the bottom of the carafe and may need to use bottle cleaning brush to clean the bottom of the carafe.

Brew time

Brew time is also one of the aspects considered by ECBC  while certifying any coffee makers. By heating water to optimal temperatures, KBGT-741 brews 10 cups of coffee fast and brings out the best flavor in the grinds. The full cycle takes nearly 4 to 6 minutes.

Fast brew cycle and perfect tasting coffee….it is truly the best drip coffee maker.

Durability

The terms Moccamaster and durability can be used interchangeably! KBGT-741 comes with 5 years warranty but I am sure that a single machine will last a lifetime. This coffee maker has a solid body with all aluminum parts. Even those few plastic parts are BPA free. The heavy-duty boiler of this machine has a copper element with dual safety guard.

Appearance

I am not so happy with the looks of KBGT. It looks much like a coffee brewer for commercial use. Kitchen aesthetics may not like this boring industrial design.

The machine is a bit too tall. Hope you don’t have cabinets above your kitchen countertop. You can place it but may need to drag the machine out each time to fill water in the water reservoir.

Nothing much to expect in terms of color as well, since it comes in a single color – silver. In that way, the  KBGT 741 model is quite interesting. They have introduced in twelve different colors – Silver, Red, Pink, Green, Orange, Blue, Grape, Yellow, Black, Grey, Satin, and White.

Our Verdict

The Technivorm Moccamaster KBGT 741 is a simple drip coffee brewer. There are no fancy options which you may not actually need. The SCAA certified coffee maker gives you the great tasting coffee consistently.

Though the machine is bit expensive, you need to consider coffee taste, durability, ease of use and cleaning ease. I am sure; you don’t have to compromise with any of this.  It is obvious that you will spend more than $300 on much more inferior machines over the course of 2 years. So remember this before casting this machine as completely outside of your budget.

So, if you want a reliable and heavily durable drip coffee brewer that promises to give great tasting cuppa each time, if you don’t want to buy coffee machine once in every two years and want to buy one machine that lasts for a lifetime; if you are ok with coffee maker’s appearance and ready to keep this geeky tall machine in your kitchen, then go for Technivorm Moccamaster KBGT 741.
